The famous black hole is even more massive than previously thought

The Cygnus X-1 system is home to one of the most famous black holes in the world. It was the first black hole discovered and became one of the best-studied objects of its kind

It was even the subject of a wager between two renowned physicists: Stephen Hawking and Kip Thorne. Thorne bet Hawking that the object was a black hole in 1974, and Hawking happily admitted in 1990 when the data came in, reported Digitaltrends.

Now, astronomers at the International Center for Research on Radio Astronomy (ICRAR), discovered something surprising about this often-observed object: it is both more massive and further away than previously thought.

Like Titan, Pluto’s atmosphere is hazy, but for a different reason

To measure the distance to the object more accurately, the researchers used the Very Long Baseline Array – a group of 10 shells over the U. – and a technique based on it, the object from different angles as the earth rotates.

“If we can look at the same object from different places, we can calculate the distance from us by measuring how far the object appears to be moving relative to the background,” explained the lead researcher Professor James Miller-Jones of Curtin University and the International Center for Radio Astronomyfors Chung (ICRAR) in a statement.

“If you hold your finger in front of your eyes and look at it with one eye at a time, you will find that your finger seems to jump from one place to another. It’s exactly the same principle.

The recently collected data was also compared to previous readings taken a decade ago, which helped reveal the extra mass of the black hole. “We observed a full orbit of the black hole over six days and used observations of the same system with the same telescope array system in 2011,” Professor Miller-Jones said. “This method and our new measurements show that the system is further away than before thought with a black hole that is much more massaged. ”

The new results show that the black hole has a mass 21 times the mass of the sun, which is 50% more than previously thought than was previously thought ABOUT THIS BLACK HOLE IS THAT it has a superspiritual companion star that is 22 times the size of the Sun orbits close together and very fast to complete an orbit every five and a half days.
